DIY: Ripped Skinny Jeans
I must admit one thing: I love those “Punky”, rebellious trends, although I tend to believe one has to combine them in a way that differentiates you from the thirteen-year-old Hot Topic crowd. There are two trends like that I especially loved for the last two seasons: Docs and ripped skinny jeans. This post is dedicated to the latter (don’t worry, I’ll show my love to docs as well.)
After having searched through every single store in Göttingen for the last one and a half months, I have come to a conclusion that there are no awesome ripped skinnies (like the ones from Topshop) to be found anywhere. Which was when I decided to make some myself. For some people it would be a natural choice from the start, but not for a clumsy little girl like me, who has ruined many items in her earlier DIY project. However, this turned out really easy even for someone as hopeless as me.
Step one: Get some skinny jeans. I find that darker washes (preferrably black) are the best for the winter, although lighter washes can look really awesome as well. Don’t spend too much on it, in case you fuck it up, yet look at the quality of the denim. Really thin “cheapo” denim will not fray the way thicker denim fabrics do. Good places to look are stores like H&M (good quality, yet cheap) or thrift stores.
Step two: Put those babies on. When you’re wearing the jeans, you will be able to mark the holes where you want them on your body. Then mark the rips with chalk or (the way I did, at least) white eyeliner. Remember: you can have them as ripped as you want.
Step three: Rip it. Use a small kitchen knife to get the holes as frayed as possible. Make them a little smaller than you’d like your finished product to look. Because you will..
Step four: Wash them! To achieve an ultimately frayed look (and get rid of the chalk/eyeliner marks) put your jeans in the washing mashine. Just make sure the wash is mild enough as not to ruin them.
Step five: Wear them with pride and look fierce while doing so! Now, if only there was an equally idiot-proof tutorial for sequinned leggings..
